Rosemary Quarles Smith, a lifelong resident of Lake Charles, La., passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on Feb. 23, 2025. She was born on Feb. 6, 1933, in Zwolle, La., to the late Earl Quarles and Lola Ferguson Quarles-Castillo (Shon).
Rosemary was preceded in death by her brother, Earl “Buddy” Quarles; sisters, Josephine Schapker and Gladys Fortsch; and stepbrothers and stepsisters, Gene and Shon Castillo, Bea Painter, and Margie Corbello.
She is survived by her children, Robert Lyons and Karen Lyons Labarba, both of Dallas, Texas; stepdaughter, Deborah Lyons Broussard of Lake Charles; and granddaughter, Alexis Labarba of Venice, Calif.
She is also survived by her brothers, Gerald Quarles (Patti) of Lake Charles, La.; Lloyd Quarles (Delia) of Yucaipa, Calif.; Ronnie Quarles of Zwolle, La.; and sister, Jenny Panunto (Paul) of Camp Wood, Texas. Rosemary leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will cherish her memory.
A graduate of St. Charles Academy, Rosemary had a passion for gardening and took great pride in cooking for her family. One of her greatest joys in life was learning the sport of skeet shooting. She had a keen eye for decorating and took pride in her beautifully adorned home. In her early years, she attended Secretarial School and later partnered with her husband in managing an insurance adjustment business. She also pursued her entrepreneurial spirit by starting and owning a successful gift shop and car rental business for many years.
The family encourages those who knew her to share memories and stories that celebrate her life.
