Gene “G. R.” Rene Stutes

Gene “G.R.” Rene Stutes, age 79, of Sweetlake, La. passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024.
He was born on August 24, 1944, in Crowley, La. Gene, known to many as “G.R.”, led a life dedicated to his faith and hard work. He was a 1963 graduate of LaGrange High School and a longtime member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 106. He had a successful career spanning over 50 years in various industries across the United States.
He was a skilled commercial fisherman, owning and operating multiple shrimp boats. Serving the Lord, his family, and shrimping were his passions. He also enjoyed playing guitar for the church and his family. He loved helping people and was a generous and caring friend to many. Most will remember Gene for his wonderful sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife, Stephanie Stutes; his children, Gina Lack (Jackie), Jessica Fisher (Sean), Taylor Stutes (Caitlin), Sadie Stutes (fiancé, Nathan); step-children, Casey Caudill, Kelly Budd, Tory Caudill (Tiffany); his brother, David Stutes (Aziza); his sisters, Mona Duhon (Johnny) and Sylvia Murrell (Gerald), and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Phorbus and Delta Stutes, and his sister, Dolores Hodges (John R “Sonny”).
Gene will be deeply missed and will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. His dedication to family, work, and faith leaves a legacy that will be cherished by many.
The family will welcome the public for visitation at J. E. Hixson & Sons Funeral Home Wednesday, April 24, 2024 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Visitation will resume Thursday, April 25, 2024 at 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Grandlake-Sweetlake Community Cemetery.
