IOWA — In a battle of top 10 teams, Barbe set the pace early to score its second win over Iowa this season, 55-44.
The Bucs, ranked No. 10 in Nonselect Division I, jumped on the Yellow Jackets, ranked No. 2 in Nonselect Division II, quickly with a 9-0 lead.
Iowa pulled within two points on a 3-pointer by Di’Amon Levings, but the Bucs surged again to push their lead to 20-10 when Mia Colston hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer off a steal and pass from Daly Maldanado.
“We try to play fast,” Barbe head coach Trey DiGiglia said. “A lot of teams claim they play fast, but it’s hard to keep up with us, and that’s what we try to do.
“We play a lot of people, and that’s how we practice. That’s what we preach, and sometimes it works.”
Aniyah Lavan led Barbe with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Mia Colston hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Maleigha James added 11 points and six rebounds.
Barbe held Iowa to its second-lowest point total of the season while forcing 21 turnovers. Maldanado and Aniyah Lavan had four steals each and Jordynn Blanchard added three.
That’s kind of what we do,” DiGiglia said. “We’re a little on the smaller end for 5A, but Daly and Aniyah really set the tone up top.
“And today, we were really following the game plan, jumping the lanes when we were supposed to. That’s another big part of what we do. We try to force turnovers, and we were fortunate enough to be able to.”
Iowa trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half but made a comeback early in the second half. Aubrey Young opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer, then Kimora Celestine hit a fade-away jumper and scored on an offensive board to pull the Yellow Jackets within four points, 34-30, with 3:15 left in the third quarter.
Celestine had 10 points and eight rebounds, and Kamylle Jones finished with 10 points.
