In a battle of unbeatens, Catholic-Baton Rouge got hot in the second half to pull away from Lake Charles College Prep 61-37 to win the Showdown in the Lake championship on Saturday at Hamilton Christian Academy.
The Bears were led by forward Matthew Trahan who had a game-high 20 points plus eight rebounds, while guard Tate McCurry had 17 points.
The Bears (8-0) led 25-20 at halftime and outscored the Trailblazers 27-9 in the third quarter, shooting 57 percent plus 50 percent from 3-point range. Trahan and McCurry led the way with eight points each. Trahan started a 12-4 run with a bucket in the lane. McCurry followed with a baseline jumper and back-to-back 3-pointers to put Catholic up 37-24 with 4:30 left in the third quarter.
The first minute and half of the game was scoreless until Catholic’s Mika Lacey hit a three.
LCCP fell behind by as many as seven points in the first quarter after shooting 20 percent but came alive in the second quarter and went on a 9-2 run to cut Catholic’s lead to one. Juriah Matthews’s pull-up jumper in the lane cut the deficit to 21-20 with 1:37 left in the first half.
But the Trailblazers couldn’t maintain that momentum in the second half and had a six-minute scoreless streak in the fourth quarter and the Bears went on an 11-0 run.
Evan Burns led LCCP with six points, and Matthews and Tyrone Brooks scored five each.
