A Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy shot a driver Thursday morning who attempted to drive off with him in the vehicle.

Spokesperson Kayla Vincent said the deputy, a member of the Combined Anti-Drug Task Force Team, initiated a traffic stop on Interstate 10 eastbound near Iowa, La., and discovered illegal narcotics during a search of the vehicle.

“While the deputy was still inside the vehicle, the suspect entered the driver’s side and drove off, fleeing the scene, with the deputy still inside, kidnapping the deputy,” Vincent said. “The deputy made verbal commands for the suspect to stop and he did not comply, at which time the deputy fired his weapon, hitting the suspect.”

Vincent said the vehicle crashed and the driver and deputy were transported to a local hospital.

She said her office is investigating the driver on charges of drug possession, attempted first-degree murder of a deputy and the kidnapping of the deputy.

Vincent said Sheriff Tony Mancuso has requested the Louisiana State Police conduct an investigation because it was an officer-involved shooting.

Sgt. Derek Senegal said anyone with information and/or pictures and video can anonymously report information through the Louisiana State Police online reporting system by visiting https://dpsweb.dps.louisiana.gov/suspicious.nsf/WebForm or calling the LSP Fusion Center Hotline at 1-800-434-8007.
