The Jennings City Council unanimously approved the sale of surplus property Tuesday to Calvary Baptist Church.

“The church is interested in acquiring this parcel,” Mayor Henry Guinn said. “It is adjudicated and I think it would be a good thing to put it back in productivity.”

City attorney Derek Bisig said the property is located adjacent to the church’s parking lot. The church has maintained the lot for over a year which allows them to buy the lot from the city without public auction.

“We just have to declare it surplus and they have to wait their six month time period.” Bisig said.

In other matters the council declared a $47,000 hurricane renovation project at the city’s sewer plant as substantially complete.

“This is one of the many hurricane recovery projects that we have ongoing,” Guinn said. “It is substantially complete and all the repairs have been finalized and the punch list is complete. It is ready to close.

The council also declared a $38,000 renovation project at the city’s dog pound as substantially complete.

“As with the prior resolution, this is one of about 20 projects dealing with hurricane recovery,” Guinn said, noting that the dog pound received a substantial amount of fence damage which has been repaired.

Cost of the renovation projects were covered by insurance.

The city has been able to close five hurricane damage related projects with 13 projects remaining to be completed, Guinn said.
