Increasing risk for severe weather on Fat Tuesday

While conditions are expected to remain dry and mild throughout the weekend and into early Monday, the same cannot be said for Fat Tuesday.

“We have a big day coming up — perhaps the biggest day of the year — but it’s going to coincide with a risk for some thunderstorms and severe activity,” said National Weather Service Lake Charles Storm Warning Meteorologist Doug Cramer.

A few showers will be possible on Monday, but the majority of the rainfall is expected beginning mid-day Tuesday.

“We could see some morning isolated activity, but it’s going to be mid-day and into the afternoon when we will see more organized, robust showers that potentially create some severe weather on Tuesday,” Cramer said. “That will quickly sweep through by the late afternoon hours and set the stage for a pretty much dry rest of the week.”

The rainfall is expected to begin at noon and could last through 6 p.m. Wind speeds up to 33 mph is also possible during the same time period.

“Some of those child playground bounce houses can sometimes become active wind sails and shoot up in the air so be aware of that on Tuesday,” Cramer warned.

He said the weather is “looking pretty good” for weekend parades schedule around the region.

Temperatures are expected in the mid-70s through next Friday.

“It’s looking like we’re starting to transition into spring, for sure,” he said.
