Bryce Jordan no-go in postseason
BATON ROUGE — Former Barbe High star Bryce Jordan won’t play in the LSU postseason.
Jordan, whose twin Beau is the Tigers’ starting designated hitter, has missed the entire season after having knee surgery just before the regular season’s first game.
But it raised some eyebrows when Jordan returned to workouts ahead of schedule and took batting practice a few weeks ago, well ahead of schedule, and head coach Paul Mainieri didn’t rule out a return for the postseason.
Now he has ruled him out after Jordan experienced some hamstring tightness while trying to work out.
Jordan, the All-SEC DH a year ago, will return next season with two years of eligibility remaining.
ALL AMERICAN:
Three Tigers were named to the Collegiate Baseball All-American team Thursday. Right fielder Greg Deichmann was on the first team, starting pitcher Alex Lange was a second-teamer and shortstop Kramer Robertson was on the first team. No other players in this regionals were on any of the teams, but former Barbe pitcher Gunner Leger of Louisiana-Lafayette was a third-team selection.
Deichmann is a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award given to college baseball’s top player.
NO GUARANTEES:
LSU is one of eight national seeds (No. 4) for a record-tying sixth consecutive season but has reached Omaha only two of the previous five. That’s not unusual. This decade only 40 percent of the national seeds have advanced to the CWS, and last year two made it. Overall, Mainieri’s Tigers have been a national seed seven times and reached Omaha four times. No national seed has won the CWS in the last five years.
CLOSE TO GUARANTEED:
Texas Southern, LSU’s opening opponent today, got in the regional with an automatic bid by winning the SWAC tournament.
In his career at LSU, Mainieri is 30-0 against SWAC teams. His Tigers are 2-0 against Texas Southern, including a 12-1 regional-opening victory in the 2008 regional.
PITY THE P.A. ANNOUNCER:
That’s Bill Franquez for LSU’s Alex Box Stadium, and he’ll have one of his biggest challenges when Texas Southern’s center fielder comes to the plate. His name? Olajide Oloruntimilehin.
