City proposes rate hike for water, sewer and trash

JENNINGS — The city on Tuesday proposed a 5 percent rate hike for water and sewer service and a 1 percent increase for trash collection.

The proposed increases would take effect July 1, if approved by the City Council at a 5:30 p.m. June 27 special meeting. The city annually adjusts the rates.

The garbage rate increase is based on a Consumer Price Index adjustment, which relies heavily on fuel costs.

The increase would raise the average resident’s water bill by about $1.50 a month, Mayor Terry Duhon said. Customers who use more water would see a higher rate.

Service charges for garbage collection would increase to $19.10 for residential and most commercial users.

Under the proposed water rate increase, residents would pay a basic rate of $13.27 a month for the first 2,000 gallons used and $2.21 per 1,000 gallons for the next 13,000 gallons. The charges are reduced further as more water and sewer services are used.

The rates to be charged per residence or per commercial establishment for water consumption outside the city will be $16 for residential and $17.71 for commercial based on the first 2,000 gallons.

Sewer rates will be charged per residence or commercial establishment for sewer use in the city based on water consumption, with the cost of $13.27 for residential for the first 2,000 gallons and $22.11 for commercial use.

Sewer rates outside the city will be $16.41 for residential and $26.49 for commercial for the first 2,000 gallons.

Silverwood residents and businesses would see slightly higher bills, with residential rates at $31.91 and commercial rates at $53.18 for the first 2,000 gallons. The cost would be $3.38 per 1,000 gallons for both residential and commercial users for the next 13,000 gallons.

Water and sewer tap fees would also increase.
