No easy tasks for Westlake, Sulphur

In this edition of the Three Point Stance, staff writers Warren Arceneaux and Rodrick Anderson discuss Week 3 games involving area large schools.

What is the most interesting game?

RA: Leesville at Westlake. A Class 4A playing a 3A may not seem like a big deal, but the Rams took the Wampus Cats down to the wire last year before losing 18-14. The key for Westlake will be breaking through the Wampus Cats’ offensive line that weighs more than 1,300 pounds combined and has a pair of Division I commitments in Matthew Anderson (Nebraska) and Monte Lynch (Stephen F. Austin). Leesville will have to find a way to contain the host of running backs the Rams employ in their wing-T offense, led by J.J. Ross.

WA: Sulphur at Byrd. The Tors have a powerful offense, led by quarterback Morgan Clark and receivers Branden Walker and Gage Rapp. The Yellow Jackets are strong on defense, allowing 22 points in two games. Last year the Tors did just enough to pull out a 21-9 home win. This time the degree of difficulty is higher, having to make the long trip to Shreveport. A win would produce a bevy of power points and make the almost 3-plus-hour bus ride home a lot easier to handle.

What is the best in-game matchup?

RA: LaGrange’s defense vs. Ferriday’s Milligan trio. LaGrange’s defense has had a its moments in the first two week, holding Notre Dame to 14 points in the first half before giving up 21 in the third, and keeping Teurlings Catholic in check in three quarters. The Gators will need to put together a complete game to stop Ferriday’s sophomore trio of Byron, Jyrin and Da’minya Milligan. Jyrin threw for 228 yards and a touchdown last week, while Byron and Da’minya have combined for five rushing and receiving touchdowns.

WA: St. Louis run game vs. Barbe defensive front. The Bucs have no returning starters and not much size up front, but the newcomers have held their own with the Bucs landing wins against Riverside Academy and Ponchatoula. The Saints will want to run the ball to keep possession and limit the number of chances the explosive Bucs offense gets to put points on the board.

Who is a player to watch?

RA: Washington-Marion WR William Carswell. After he was held to two catches for 10 yards in Week 1, Carswell had a breakout game last week with five catches for 212 yards and three touchdowns. Carswell’s big game put the Charging Indians right on the doorstep of their first win but they lost 45-44 to DeRidder on the game’s final play. Another big night from Carswell could put W-M into the win column when it hosts Ville Platte this week.

WA: Lake Charles College Prep running back Orenthal Lewis. With wet field conditions likely, the bigger half of the Trail Blazers’ tailback tandem should get a heavy workload. Lewis responded in similar conditions last week, gaining 85 yards on eight carries and scoring on a 32-yard run to help the Class 3A Blazers beat 4A Rayne. This week the Blazers face another 4A team, Northside, with a chance to move to 3-0.
””Three-point Stance
