Neighborhood rivalry game

It’s showdown week in District 4-3A, with the four teams without a district loss meeting in a pair of high-stakes football games.

Cougar Stadium tenants Lake Charles College Prep (4-0, 1-0) and St. Louis (1-3, 1-0) meet while Jennings (2-2, 1-0) and WashingtonMarion (2-2, 0-0) play in Lake Charles, with both teams riding two-game winning streaks.

The Trailblazers can extend the program’s longest winning streak and match their highest win total with a victory.

Prep continued its hot start with a 50-14 win at Westlake last week. Dylan Vincent led the defense last week with 16 tackles and two sacks.

“He is just a very strong and versatile athlete that can play different positions,” said Blazers head coach Erick Franklin. “(Last week) I thought we played together as a team and we played hard.”

St. Louis earned its first win last week, beating South Beauregard 38-30. Evan Joubert ran for 197 yards and three touchdowns.

“St. Louis ran the ball very well last week,” Franklin said. “We will have to stay disciplined and stop the run.”

Jennings at W-M

Across town, W-M will be looking to continue the offensive fireworks.

The Charging Indians have scored 156 points over the past three weeks. Quarterback MarQuez Chagois has thrown 11 touchdown passes.

“They are fast and athletic,” Jennings head coach Rusty Phelps said of W-M. “They can take a 3-yard pass and turn it into a 97-yard completion.

“The running back (Carrington McClinton) is an exceptional player who turns around and plays defense. They are physical and are playing well.”

Jennings won in dramatic fashion last week, edging Iowa 23-20 on an Ian Mullen field goal as time expired. Quarterback Kole Myers completed 8 of 9 passes for 122 yards and three touchdowns.

“We were down 20-7 and found a way to come back, so hats off to the players and coaches for finding a way to win,” Phelps said. “Hopefully that gives us a boost going into this game.”

Westlake at Iowa

Westlake (1-3, 0-1) travels to Iowa (0-4, 0-1)

Each team needs a win to remain in the title chase. The Rams (1-3, 0-1) moved the ball against LCCP last week, but were hurt by two turnovers deep in Blazers territory. J.J. Ross led the attack with 125 rushing yards and a touchdown.

The Yellow Jackets (0-4, 0-1) led 20-7 after three quarters before Jennings rallied for the win. Tyrone Brass led the ’Jackets with 103 rushing yards and a touchdown.

N. Vermilion at S. Beaureard

In a non-district game, South Beauregard (1-3) will host North Vermilion (3-1). Golden Knight running backs Colby Hollier and Jayden Derouen have combined to run for 562 yards and six touchdowns over the past two weeks.
