Family Fun Day to benefit veterans

The Vietnam Veterans of America Lake Charles chapter is hosting a Family Fun Day this weekend at the Lake Charles Gun Club, 6601 Ward Line Road.

The event will feature a variety of outdoor activities benefiting “not just Vietnam veterans, but veterans of all conflicts,” said Mallory J. “Doc” Lessard, state council secretary.

The gun club will open at 9 a.m. Saturday for members and non-members for $10. Participants will have use of the western town shooting range and the pistol range for $5.

A quick-draw competition will be held at the western town range, using air guns and balloons, for $5. Prizes will be awarded to the three fastest shooters.

A poker run is also scheduled, with registration from 8-9 a.m. and kick stands up at 9 a.m. The poker run is open to motorcycles, Jeeps or “anything they want to ride,” Lessard said. Registration is $20 per vehicle and includes a split-the-pot ticket and a “highlow hand” entry to win $50 or $100 at each stop.

A free classic car show will run 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Viewers will vote for their favorite car by making a donation, and the winnings will be given to the top three highest-earning vehicles.

Throughout the day, $20 raffle tickets will be on sale for a chance to win a 2018 450 Polaris Sportsman 4-wheeler during a 3 p.m. drawing; the event will also feature daylong live and silent auction opportunities.

Free fun jumps and water inflatables for children will be available, and food will be sold for $5.

All of the event’s proceeds will go directly toward veterans assistance, Lessard said, as the organization has no CEO or paid positions.

“We all pretty much feel like we’re commissioned. It is our duty now as veterans that survived to give back.”
