Keep Halloween safe for kids tonight

The American Press

It’s trick-or-treat time in Southwest Louisiana, with communities throughout our area preparing for costumed children to go door-to-door asking for treats.

Excited youngsters will be running to and fro tonight, maybe too excited to remember basic safety rules about crossing the streets and highways. We encourage you to think about and practice them, remembering many of the children won’t. We must remain vigilant for possible hazards and dangerous situations.

Let’s be certain Halloween is safe and fun for all it’s intended to be.

Louisiana State Police recommends the following safety tips to help us do just that:

• Ensure your child carries a flashlight or glow stick and wears reflective clothing or costumes to alert drivers of the child’s location.

• Masks can restrict vision and breathing, restricting sight of incoming vehicles. Consider instead face painting, which can be a safer option.

• Costumes should fit children correctly so as not to pose a tripping hazard.

• Children should be accompanied by adults or parents, and should not be allowed to enter homes or vehicles without supervision.

• Plan your trick-or-treating route in familiar neighborhoods with well-lit streets.

• Always walk on sidewalks when available.

• Children should know their address, phone number and how to dial 911 for emergencies. Young children should have this information attached somewhere on their costume in the event they get separated or lost.

• Parents are urged to inspect all candy for safety after returning home.

ª Motorists should drive extra slow through neighborhoods with their headlights on even during daylight hours.

• Do not drink and drive.

The Louisiana State Police and the American Press wants everyone to have a safe — and fun — celebration tonight.””Halloween Safety
