Scene Fall Preview: Lutcher Theater’s 44th season offers ‘something for everyone’
Lutcher Theater is offering “something for everyone” as it launches its 44th season, featuring performances by country music icon Craig Morgan, a cappella sensation Voctave and several Broadway smash hits.
“Something we’re doing a little bit different this season is we are also offering a candlelight concert series,” said JT Robertson, the marketing-public relations associate for Lutcher. “We’re going to have two candlelight concerts and we want this to be a more intimate experience. We’re opening up the floor section, tickets will be a little bit cheaper, and we have some amazing artists we’re bringing in for them.”
The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra — a Louisiana-based group that performs Big Band-style sound influenced by the likes of Louis Armstrong — will perform at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24. Scott Mulvahill — a multi-instrumentalist who is a world-renowned upright bassist — will perform at 7:30 p.m. April 20.
“Scott’s been described as a musician’s musician,” Robertson said. “He’s really talented with a really cool sound.”
The season will kick off with a performance by Morgan, set for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15.
Robertson said this season’s Broadway lineup is “amazing.”
There will be two performances of Tina Fey’s “Mean Girls,” set for 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4; “Stomp” will take the stage 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8 and 2 p.m. Dec. 9; “On Your Feet! The Story of Emilio & Gloria Estefan” is set for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 9; “Pretty Woman The Musical” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2 and 2 p.m. Feb. 3; “Little Women” is set for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15; “Come From Away” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. March 14; “Annie” is set for 7:30 p.m. April 4; and “Chicago” will close the season at 7:30 p.m. May 9.
“ ‘Come From Away’ is the true story of when planes were diverted on 9/11 and 7,000 passengers had to land in this small-town in Newfoundland,” Robertson said. “It’s a heart-warming story of how this little bitty small town of only a couple hundred people took all of these people in and showed them warmth and hospitality, definitely at a time when people needed it.”
During that fateful week cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust and gratitude grew into friendships, Robertson said.
“It’s going to resonate with a lot of people.”
Robertson said for those who have family members not familiar with the theater, she encourages bringing them to “Stomp.”
“That’s always a good one because it’s fun, it’s loud, you don’t necessarily have to be quiet the whole show and it’s very entertaining,” she said. “It’s great for the kids, but it’s also great for the grandparents.”
Voctave, an 11-member vocal ensemble group made up of former Disney character actors, will be performing the “Spirit of the Season” at 7 p.m. Dec. 17.
“They are just pure talent and everybody loves them,” she said. “They share stories as well as sing and they make it so relatable and fun for everyone.”
Robertson said she expects attendees to dance in the aisle during “On Your Feet!”
“There will be some great 80s music performed, I don’t know how anyone could keep from wanting to dance,” she said with a laugh. “This is really going to be a show-stopper season.”
Robertson said though “Chicago” isn’t scheduled until May, nearly all of the floor seats have been sold.
“It’s crazy; the tickets for ‘Chicago’ are flying off the shelves,” she said.
Robertson said, for the most part tickets will range from about $35 to $90 this season, depending on the show and the seat. For more information, visit lutcher.org.
