Bringing on the fa-la-la-la-fun: Jennings unleashs Christmas spirit with full weekend of events
If you are looking to fill your cup with holiday cheer, there’s plenty of activities planned this weekend in the City of Jennings.
From a parade to hayrides and fireworks there is a host of events for the whole family beginning at 5 p.m. Friday when Main Street Jennings comes alive with holiday festivities. The fun continues on Saturday and Sunday with the CHIPS Youth Theatre group on stage for a double feature holiday performance.
“Having the festival downtown is a good way to promote what we are doing downtown,” City Project Coordinator Lin Fake said. “It’s very important that people come out and support us,.”
Festivities kick off at 5 p.m. Friday with the opening of craft and food booths in and around Founders Park on Main Street. Downtown businesses will also be open with extended hours and specials for holiday shoppers.
Craft vendors will be selling jewelry, yard signs, bath and body gifts, clothing and accessories, key chains, license plates, tumblers, candied pecans, pies, canned goods, funnel cakes, coffee, and more. People can also make their own tie dye t-shirt.
Food will be sold in and around Founders Park.
The highlight of the day will be the annual Christmas parade, which rolls down Main Street at 5:30 p.m. Line up for the parade begins at 4:30 p.m. on N. Main Street at the corner of Railroad Avenue by the City Hall. The parade will head north on Main Street to Shankland Avenue.
The parade will feature decorated floats, golf carts, motorcycles, antique tractors, cheer teams, youth groups and more.
Judging for the parade will be in front of the W.H. Tupper Museum, 311 N. Main Street. There will be cash prize winners selected in several categories including floats, golf carts, decorated vehicles, high school band and marching units. Winners will be announced at Founders Park after the parade.
The holiday cheer continues until 6:30 p.m. in Founders Park after the parade with hot chocolate and photos with Santa, hayrides to see the lights and a live Nativity at First Baptist Church and more.
The W.H. Tupper Museum and its Hall of Trees will be open until 8 p.m. with a special admission price of $1. The exhibit features beautifully decorated Christmas trees and retro holiday decorations including vintage ornaments, toys, ceramic cookie jars and more.
The night concludes with a fireworks display at 8:30 p.m. The fireworks will be set off at the Jennings Airport, but the public is asked to find their favorite spot to view the display.
The festivities continue on Saturday and Sunday with the Jeff Davis Arts Council and CHIPS Youth Theatre’s double feature of “What Could Go Wrong the Night Before Christmas” and “Dear Mrs. Claus.” Performances are at 6 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Strand Theatre, 432 N. Main Street. Doors open 30 minutes before the show.
Tickets are $5 and will be available at the box office before the show.
