Arts and Humanities Council grant applications accepted through Friday

The application window for the Arts and Humanities Council of SWLA’s last grant of the year closes on Friday, June 30, at 5 p.m.

The Louisiana Project Grant is a partnership between the Louisiana Division of the Arts and arts councils throughout the state, and financially supports community-based arts projects in the area.

A diverse slate of disciplines are eligible for the grant, such as dance, design, folklife (regional and community traditions), literature, media, music, theater and visual arts and crafts. The goal of the grant is to fund artistic projects that meet community needs, promote diversity, support local artists and highlight a region’s cultural and creative development.

Recipients can include local government agencies, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations and individual artists.

“Simply put, it is a way for us to put money into the arts,” a representative from the Arts and Humanities Council of SWLA told the American Press. “It helps us really hone in on our community’s need and creativity.”

SWLA’s art council annually awards 12 to 14 applicants across all available grants during their grant cycle, she said. The Lake Area Ballet Theater’s performance of “The Nutcracker” serves as an example from last year’s cycle.

The Arts and Humanities Council of SWLA covers region 5 — Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron and Jefferson Davis parishes. Selected recipients of the Louisiana Project Grant from these parishes will receive $2,500 to $5,000 in funding, and must be able to provide at least a 50 percent cash match for the project.

In August, regional grant panels will review applications for funding recommendations.
