See the ‘wonder and delight’ of late LC artist

The art of the late Lake Charles artist M. Antoon will be featured in the second-floor gallery at the Lake Charles Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center until July 15.

“Wonder and Delight: The Work of M. Antoon” will feature pieces depicting flora, foliage, feathers and fish (to name a few) that were created during Antoon’s career.

According to a release from the Historic City Hall, “This retrospective collection celebrates the extraordinary artistic journey and life of Melinda Antoon Cormier, who painted under the name of M. Antoon.”

She was a highly respected area artist that was regarded for her “commitment to the arts and cultural well-being of our community.”

Antoon was a vitally active member of Southwest Louisiana’s artistic community. She nurtured the love of art in children as a teacher, operated a fine art gallery for 16 years, played a role in the creation of the Artisans’ Gallery and was a curator and installer at the Imperial Calcasieu Museum.

During her 50-year career, Antoon created over 1,200 large art pieces, as well as many smaller works. She regularly used watercolor, pastel, acrylic and multimedia assemblage and collage as her artistic mediums.

Many of these pieces will be exhibited. “Through a captivating collection of her many styles and medias, guests will be immersed in Anton’s world of wonder and delight.”

The Historic City Hall is encouraging anyone that owns a piece of Antoon’s art to email a photo of their collection, as well as a description of what is special about the piece, to artsandculture@cityoflc.us.
