Sam’s Southern Eatery
Restaurant offers home-style Southern cooking with lots of seafood choices
If you haven’t yet discovered it, Sam’s Southern Eatery, which bills itself “home of the jumbo shrimp,” is located in the old Arby’s restaurant at 3121 Gertsner Memorial Dr.
Sam’s is a chain with locations in five other states and seven other Louisiana cities. The Lake Charles location opened April 18, 2016.
Sam’s serves po’ boys, burgers, salads, seafood, chicken and appetizers.
The wonderful thing about Sam’s is that 12 of the 21 available seafood entrees can be ordered grilled or fried.
According to Sylvia Jones, who has worked at the location since it opened, both choices are equally popular with local customers.
“Lot’s of people are trying to eat healthier now and order grilled; but this is Louisiana, so we do still sell a lot of fried food,” she said.
Menu items No. 20 and No. 28 are two of this restaurant’s top sellers, said Jones. No. 20 is five pieces of shrimp and one piece of fish. No. 28 is three pieces of fish and three shrimp. Both can be ordered fried or grilled and both cost $9.99.
Menu item No. 23: 12 pieces of shrimp, fried, with sides of fries and coleslaw, for $13.99
I will stop right here and say that the best advice for a Sam’s newbie is to arrive hungry, because this food — whether you go with fried or grilled — is going to fill you up.
Although customers can dine in or pick up their order at the drive-through window, on my recent visit, I dined in.
I ordered the No. 28 (three pieces of fish and three shrimp with a choice of two sides) grilled, with sides of coleslaw and green beans.
My husband ordered No. 23: the 12-piece shrimp dinner, fried, for $13.99. (This one is also available grilled.) He chose fries and coleslaw for his two sides.
When our orders arrived, my first thought was, “These are the biggest shrimp I’ve ever seen.” They were huge.
The meals did not disappoint. My grilled fish and jumbo-sized shrimp were spicy and juicy. The entree was served with grilled white and purple onion, grilled red and green bell pepper and a really fresh roll.
The shrimp in my husband’s 12-piece shrimp dinner were fried up in a thick, crusty batter. They were crunchy outside, and tender and juicy on the inside, he said.
Our seafood choices were delicious and extremely filling. The total, with tax, for both was $26.56.
You will not walk away broke or hungry after a visit to Sam’s. Diners get lots of food for a good price.
