Iowa, Jennings have tough non-district contests

Three-point Stance

In this edition of the Three Point Stance, Rodrick Anderson and Warren Arceneaux discuss the schedules of area 3A teams.

What is the best nondistrict game involving a local 3A team?

WA: Iowa at Crowley in Week 1. The Jackets and Gents split a pair of games last year, with Crowley handing Iowa its only loss of the season in the playoffs. The Jackets were hit hard by graduation, but a win in the opener would serve notice that they will remain among the top teams in the district.

RA: Jennings at Church Point. Jennings missed out on its home game in Week 1 against Church Point because of heavy rains from Hurricane Harvey. The Bulldogs did get a second chance in the regional round, upsetting the Bears 28-7, but stopping the Bears’ backfield of Rodney Dupuis, Gavin Richard and Breelyn Jones a second time is going to be tough. The trio combined for 41 touchdowns 3,225 yards last year.

What is the biggest district game involving a local 3A team?

WA: Jennings at Washington-Marion. W-M lost by seven at Jennings last year, then won four straight to get back in the title race. Whoever wins this one will be in pole position for the district title. The game features two of the area’s too runners in Darrian Achane of Jennings and Carrington McClinton of W-M.

RA: Iowa at Jennings. Iowa has controlled District 4-3A the last two seasons, including an undefeated run last year. But the tough part is they will start the district journey against Jennings for the second consecutive season in Week 4. Iowa easily handled the Bulldogs last year, but the Yellow Jackets have several key positions to fill while Jennings returns several of its top starters.

Who has the least favorable schedule?

WA: Iowa opens with games at Crowley and Kinder and has to go to Jennings in Week 4 for the district opener. A tough slate for a team that doesn’t get many starters back.

RA: St. Louis undoubtedly has the toughest in District 4-3A. Their four non-district games area include local 5A schools Barbe and Sam Houston and 2A power Catholic-New Iberia to start the season. The Saints will also play 4A Leesville in Week 10. The silver lining is that the Saints get the top two contenders in the district, Iowa and Jennings, at home as they make run for their first district championship since 2015.
