A chance to show roping skills

DeRidder native will be featured on national TV

A DeRidder native will appear on network television today, showing off his roping skills on NBC’s “Little Big Shots: Forever Young” at 7 p.m.

Trick roper Chris McDaniel said his appearance on the show will provide viewers with a taste of the tricks that have made him famous.

“I do a lot of loop tricks with the rope, making them roll over my shoulder and hat, and then jumping in and out of the loop,” McDaniel said.

“The show was taped before a live studio audience, and they were fantastic. It was really great getting the chance to chat with Steve Harvey.”

Those rope skills are just one part of the show that he has built up over the years, he said. After graduating from DeRidder High School in 1973, McDaniel attended college in Pineville before moving to Nashville, Tenn., where he sang at Opryland USA. From there, he said, he began to mold his Western show, and his list of scheduled performances grew.

He has appeared on “The Late Show,” and in 2006 claimed the world record for cracking 61 targets out an assistant’s hand in one minute with his whip.

That bit of artistry, mixed with cowboy songs and humor, creates what he calls “cowboy magic,” which he said has earned him bookings worldwide.

This year, McDaniel said, he will appear at venues in New York City; will entertain aboard a luxury cruise liner; and will perform at resorts across Mexico.

Despite those exotic locations, he said, one of the most desirable venues for him is his hometown.

“You know, I have not had the chance to perform back home, but I would love to have a chance to do my show for my hometown folks in Southwest Louisiana,” McDaniel said. “Maybe one day I’ll be able to make that happen.”
