Board recognizes outgoing members

ELTON — The Jeff Davis Parish School Board closed out 2018 bidding farewell to two board members.

District 4 member Robert Menard, who did not seek re-election after serving eight years, and District 10 member Vickie Buller Hernandez, who served the remaining term of her late husband David Buller, were recognized Thursday by the board.

“Their service and dedication to fulfilling their responsibilities have been inspirational to their fellow board members and to the administrative personnel with whom they have worked,” Board President Phillip Arceneaux said.

Denise Perry will fill Menard’s seat, while Terry Leger will fill the District 10 seat.

During the board’s final meeting of the year, Superintendent Kirk Credeur presented Hernandez with a certificate thanking her for her service.

Menard did not attend the meeting, which was at Elton Elementary School.

After the meeting, Hernandez said she was thankful for her time on the board representing Lacassine and Fenton schools.

“It was an honor serving these awesome schools,” she said. “David would have been very proud of me.”

Hernandez said she will miss serving on the board, but said it was time to pass the torch on.

“It’s time for more young people to serve,” she said, adding that she would “do it again in a heartbeat,” if asked to serve.

A retired educator and former justice of the peace, Buller plans to continue to be active in education and her community. She currently works as a tutor and said she plans to continue “because God gave me that gift.”””

Students at Elton Elementary School performed “Silent Night” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” Thursday to welcome the Jeff Davis Parish School Board to their school. School Counselor Kimberly Edwards and Principal David Harper also entertained the board.
