Barbe sends five athletes to college ranks

Barbe High sent a contingent of five state champion baseball and softball players to the next level on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period.j

Shortstop/pitcher Gavin Guidry signed with LSU, which was 38-25 and reached the NCAA super regionals last season.

“It’s a dream come true,” Guidry said of playing for the six-time national champion Tigers. “They’ve always been my dream school,” Guidry said. “I’m looking forward to playing in front of that fan base, with 10,000 or 15,000 people there on Friday and Saturday nights.”

Infielder Grant Comeaux chose Louisiana Tech, which was 42-20 and played in the NCAA regionals last year.

“The coaching staff made me feel at home and they really have a great culture,” he said. “I’m looking forward to a new level of competition, the grind and trying to earn my spot.”

Catcher/utility player Donny Sandifer signed with Southern University.

“The winning and family aspects drew me,” he said. “No matter what happens there they will have your back throughout life.”

The Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament champion Jaguars were 20-30 and played in the NCAA regionals last year.

In softball, pitcher Halie Pappion signed with Boston College while outfielder Nyjah Fontenot chose Arkansas.

“It feels awesome,” Pappion said. “I’ve worked my whole life for this. Boston College was a perfect fit for me, academically and athletically.”

The Eagles were 13-32 last year and are hoping Pappion can help them earn their first winning record in three seasons.

Fontenot said a trip to Arkansas sealed the deal.

“When I took my first visit in 2018, the atmosphere and campus were breathtaking and it felt like home right away,” she said.

The Razorbacks were 43-11 last year and reached the NCAA super regionals.
