LAFAYETTE — The McNeese State baseball team couldn’t seem to get out of its own way Tuesday night in a 12-10 Louisiana-Lafayette win at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field at Russo Park.

The Cowboys (13-20) committed four errors and squandered a five-run comeback with sloppy defensive play to give the Ragin’ Cajuns (16-17) their first win in which their opponent scored more than four runs.

The Cajuns took control with three runs in the first inning off McNeese starting pitcher Cayne Ueckert.

Ueckert, who was making his first start in more than three weeks, left the game after two innings, giving up five runs — four earned — on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts. He also uncorked two wild pitches.

It looked as though ULL would run away with an easy victory as it led 7-2 going into the fifth inning, but the Cowboys put together a seven-run fifth inning to take a 9-7 lead.

Carson Maxwell led the inning off with a single into left field and Reid Bourque followed that with a walk.

The first run came with an RBI single by Shane Selman that scored Maxwell. Two batters later, Joe Provenzano cleared the bases with a two-RBI double into the right-center field gap.

Dustin Duhon followed that with an RBI single up the middle. After Andrew Bryan hit a double, which led to him coming up with a limp and exiting the game with what appeared to be a left hamstring injury. Jake Cochran hit a three-run home run over the right-field wall to give the Cowboys their first lead.

In all, the Cowboys tallied seven runs on six hits and left nobody on base.

McNeese took that lead into the sixth inning, but it didn’t exit the inning with it as ULL posted five runs on four hits and two errors in the inning to take a 12-9 lead.

One of the hits looked to be an easy dribbler for pitcher Austin Briggs, but he froze and missed the ball, allowing Zach LaFleur to get on base, scoring Hunter Kasuls.

Two batters later a throwing error by Maxwell at third base allowed pinch hitter Todd Lott to score and Tyler Stover to reach third base.

The Cowboys’ misfortunes continued in the seventh inning. After getting two runners on base with back-to-back singles by Provenzano and Duhon, Brett Whelton hit a liner straight to Kasul who turned a 6-4-3 triple play to end the inning.

The triple play was ULL’s first since March 3, 2010, against Southeastern Louisiana.

The Cowboys added a run in the eighth and threatened with runners on the corners with one out in the ninth inning, but Whelton and Cochran struck out looking to end the game.

Briggs (0-2, 6.75 ERA) suffered the loss after going 11⁄3 innings, giving up five runs — four earned — on four hits with three strikeouts.

ULL freshman Brett Williams (2-0, 4.95) got the win after going two innings, giving up six runs on five hits.

The Cowboys will get a couple days off before traveling to New Orleans for a three-game weekend Southland Conference series against UNO that begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

After a period to allow for public comment, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has released the dates for the 2018-19 duck and goose hunting seasons.

It’s basically the same as last year with the coastal and west zones opening a week earlier than the east zone for duck hunting and then the east zone closing a week later.

Splits for the coastal zone are Nov. 10-Dec. 2 and Dec. 15 – Jan. 10 with a youth hunt Nov. 3-4.

The west zone will have the same splits and will have youth hunts on Nov. 3 and Jan. 26.

The east zone will have its first split Nov. 17-Dec. 2 and its second Dec. 15 – Jan. 27. Youth hunts are Nov. 10 and Feb. 2.

The difference being that the east zone goes only a week in the first split and then goes a week longer in the second split.

Teal season kicks things off on Sept. 15 and runs through Sept. 30.

Geese are batched into only two zones – north and south and the dates for those hunts are the same in both for light geese (snow, blue, ross) and for speckle bellies (first split Nov. 3-Dec. 2, second split Dec. 15 – Feb. 10).

Splits for Canada geese are Nov. 3-Dec. 2 and Dec. 15- Jan. 31.

The dates for the conservation order for light geese (allows the use of electronic calls and unplugged shotguns and eliminates the daily bag and possession limits) are the same for both zones, Dec. 3 – Dec. 14 and Feb. 11 – March 10.

•

The daily bag limits remain the same. Six ducks can be taken daily with no more than four mallards (no more than two females), two canvasback, one mottled duck, one black duck, three wood ducks, three scaup, two redheads and two pintails.

Daily bag limit on light geese is 20 and daily limit on speckle bellies is two while the daily limit on Canada geese is one.

•

According the final report by Larry Reynolds, the waterfowl program manager for the LDWF, on last year’s duck population survey, there were almost 50 percent more birds in our area at the end of January than they were the year before.

The air survey produced these numbers for Southwest Louisiana: mallard (174,000), mottled duck (18,000), gadwall (444,000), wigeon (13,000), green wing teal (530,000), blue wing teal (41,000), shoveler (360,000), pintail (256,000), scaup (104,000), ringnecked (169,000) and canvasback (37,000).
