Last-minute TD lifts Westlake to victory

SULPHUR — Westlake made the most of its final scoring chance with quarterback Drew Winn connecting with Zac Abshire on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 28 seconds left for the game’s lone score in the Rams’ 7-0 win over South Beauregard Thursday at the SPOT Therapy/Billy Navarre Chevrolet Jamboree at Matt Walker Memorial Stadium.

In the jamboree’s second game, the Rams reached the red zone on each of their three possessions but had the first end on a failed fourth-down conversion and the second on a lost fumble.

A Timothy Jourdan interception gave the Rams one last chance in the final minute. Winn connected with Mark Ashworth for a 19-yard gain. On the next play, Winn rolled right and found Abshire open near the sideline for the score.

Winn was 6-for-6 for 88 yards.

Rams head coach Phil Fontenot said Winn showed great improvement over last week’s scrimmage with Vinton.

“He struggled last week so we had a sit-down and simplified the game for him and he did well tonight,” Fontenot said.

The Rams’ Cedric Francis had two receptions as a tight end after playing primarily on defense last season.

“I love him there, him and Evan Goss,” Fontenot said. “They rotate there and they are both big targets that are easy to find.”

South Beauregard moved the ball well early on, gaining four first downs on its opening drive, which reached the Westlake 22 before a bad snap resulted in a 20-yard loss.

Quarterback Colby Hollier ran for 75 yards on seven carries.

Head coach Dwight Hudler said he was pleased with the Golden Knights’ effort.

“The effort was good, the energy was good and we played well in spots on both sides of the ball,” he said.

“We gave up some big plays in the passing game and need to shore that up. We had a turnover and the bad snap and some penalties that hurt us on offense. There are some things we can fix. Overall we came out healthy and the kids played hard.”
