MOSS BLUFF — Jenny Griggers shut out DeRidder for the second time this season, leading the Sam Houston Broncos to a 6-0 nondistrict win over the Dragons on Tuesday.

The Broncos (26-2) extended their winning streak to 14 heading into today’s regular-season finale against Notre Dame.

Griggers allowed three hits and struck out five. No Dragon advanced beyond second base.

The Broncos scored in each of the first four innings. Jil Poullard had an RBI triple and scored a run in the first inning. Kimber Hamilton drove in a pair of runs with singles in the second and fourth innings. Makenah Hamilton drove in a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly and fielder’s choice. Kyla Hamilton singled and scored on a wild pitch.

Lauren Person had two hits to lead the DeRidder offense. The Dragons (21-10) got two runners on with two outs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Griggers escaped the jams with a fly ball to end the fifth and strikeout to end the sixth.

Three of her five strikeouts came with a runner on base.

Both teams are looking to make another deep playoff run after reaching the state tournament last season. The Broncos reached the Class 5A quarterfinals while the Dragons reached the 4A semifinals.

Broncos coach Beth Domingue said Griggers, a junior, has made strides since last season.

“She is more mature,” Domingue said. “Having last season under her belt has really helped. She has cut down on the walks and is spotting the ball much better.”

Domingue said she likes her team’s mentality.

“We have a lot of fight,” she said.

Dragons head coach Todd Schulz said his team’s experience should serve them well in the postseason.

“Our season has been good,” he said. “All our losses have been to the top five teams in 5A and the divisions. We have everybody back from last season. I think we are sitting pretty nice with the way the power ratings look. We have gotten better as a team, come together as a team, have gotten better defensively and are more aggressive on the bases.”

Both teams are third in the state power ratings.
