Former deputy pleads guilty to malfeasance
A former Calcasieu Parish sheriff’s deputy arrested in 2016 for sexual battery pleaded guilty this week to malfeasance in office.
Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Patsy Dugas said Cody Onxley, 27, was sentenced by Judge Robert Wyatt to three years’ supervised probation with the stipulation that he not contact the victim or possess a firearm.
Onxley, who had been with the Sheriff’s Office for about four years, was arrested April 11, 2016, and was fired from the department after inappropriately touching a woman he contacted under false pretenses.
Onxley was booked on charges of felony sexual battery, misdemeanor sexual battery and malfeasance in office.
Sheriff Tony Mancuso told the American Press at the time of the arrest that while on patrol Onxley called the victim to tell her he saw a moving van across the street and had received a complaint.
Mancuso said Onxley didn’t have his microphone on and didn’t have his camera when he entered the victim’s house.
He said Onxley touched the victim in an inappropriate way and attempted to engage in sexual activity with her.
Dugas said Onxley later contacted the victim and threatened her with harm if she told anyone.
“I am not only sorry for the victim, I am angry and embarrassed for our profession. Our department has so many dedicated men and women who take their oath seriously and the actions of one deputy gives them all a black eye,” Mancuso said in a 2016 statement.
“No criminal activity will be tolerated in our department and our deputies will always be held accountable for their actions,” he said. “People trust us to come into their homes when they call us. This is just something that’s uncalled for. We had to arrest one of our own people and it’s heartbreaking.”
