Murder sentencing delayed third time

Sentencing was delayed Wednesday for the third time for an 18-year-old convicted of first-degree murder last year in the 2016 shooting death of an elderly man.

Stacy Tyrone Johnson Jr. was found guilty on Sept. 27 in the death of Robert Colston Sr., 79.

Prosecutors said Johnson was planning to rob Colston on June 5, 2016, when he rode his bicycle up to the man’s truck and shot him. Colston crashed his vehicle into a tree and died later in a local hospital.

Family members of both Colston and Johnson were in court Wednesday as King Alexander, defense attorney for Johnson, told the court he had recently filed two motions in the case.

Alexander said one of the motions was about the defendant being entitled to public funding for mitigation defense and he said the other was a motion regarding certain constitutional challenges.

Although prosecutors said they were prepared Wednesday to move forward with Johnson’s sentencing, Alexander asked for a delay because he said the attorney general was not in receipt of at least one of the motions.

Prosecutor Carla Sigler objected, saying, “This family (Colston) has waited a long time for sentencing and we don’t need another delay.”

Alexander said even his client did not want a delay in sentencing but that as his defense attorney he was obligated to ask that sentencing be delayed so motions could be heard and ruled on.

Prosecutor Jacob Johnson said the defendant has continued to be “violent” while in jail awaiting trial.

“We do believe he is among the worst of the worst,” Johnson said.

Judge Guy Bradberry set a hearing on the motions for June 18 in state district court.

Sentencing for Johnson is set for June 20.

World Peace and Unification Sanctuary in Newfoundland believes the AR-15 symbolizes the “rod of iron” in the biblical book of Revelation, and encouraged couples to bring the weapons to the commitment ceremony Wednesday morning. The AR-15 is the gun used in the Florida high school massacre.

About 50 weapons, secured by orange zip-ties, have been checked in so far by the crown-wearing worshippers.

A church leader is telling those gathered that the ceremony is a blessing of couples, “not a blessing of inanimate objects.” He called the AR-15s and crowns “religious accoutrements.”

Outside the church are two sign-waving protesters. One sign says “shame” and the other calls the group an “armed cult.”
