30-year-old woman killed in crash with 18-wheeler
A 30-year-old Iowa, La., woman has succumbed to injured sustained in a Friday morning crash involving an 18-wheeler on Interstate 10.
The crash claimed the life of Adrienne Chivonne Manuel, Louisiana State Police Trooper First Class Derek Senegal said.
Senegal said a 2021 Hyundai Sonata, being operated by Manuel, was stopped for unknown reasons in the middle lane of travel on I-10. At the same time, the driver of a 2018 Kenworth 18-wheeler was traveling east behind another 18-wheeler and approaching the stopped Hyundai.
“The driver of the first 18-wheeler was able to change lanes and avoided striking the Hyundai,” Senegal said. “In an attempt to avoid a crash, the driver of the Kenworth took evasive actions by steering towards the left, but was not able to and struck the rear of the Hyundai.”
The impact caused the Hyundai to travel off the right-hand side of the roadway, Senegal said.
Manuel was properly restrained but sustained serious injuries. She was transported to a Lake Charles area hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, he said. The driver of the 18-wheeler was properly restrained and not injured.
A toxicology sample was obtained from Manuel and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
