Area teams keep upsets coming

In this edition of the Three Point Stance, staff writers Rodrick Anderson and Warren Arceneaux review the regional round of the high school football playoffs. Seven Southwest Louisiana teams remain as we head into the quarterfinals this Thanksgiving Day week.

Which area team had the most impressive performance?

WA: Oberlin pulled out a 23-22 win over traditional power Jonesboro-Hodge in a Class 1A game. The win gave the Tigers their first quarterfinal berth since 2010.

RA: DeQuincy pulled off a second upset in as many weeks. This time the Tigers handed No. 4 Rosepine its first loss of the season with a spectacular defensive performance. The Tigers held the Eagles to 14 points, their lowest total of the season.

Who is your large schools player of the week?

WA: Lake Charles College Prep running back D’Marcus Miller gained 73 total yards on nine carries, setting up the Trailblazers’ go-ahead score with a 28-yard run in the third quarter, and then sealing the victory by converting a third-and-1 play with just over a minute left, allowing the Blazers to run out the clock.

RA: Leesville senior wide receiver Duwon Tolbert caught a pair of touchdown passes in the first half to help lead the Wampus Cats to a 27-14 win over Assumption. Tolbert four passes for 101 yards and Leesville advanced to the Class 4A quarterfinals for the first time since 2000.

Who was the best small schools player?

WA: Basile backs Andre Reed, Logan David and Isaiah Ceasar combined for 399 yards and six touchdowns rushing to lead the Bearcats to a 63-40 win over Montgomery. Ceasar added another touchdown on a 28-yard reception.

RA: DeQuincy sophomore defensive back Rayden Rosalis helped seal the Tigers’ first quarterfinal berth since 1995. He picked off two fourth-quarter passes, including one with a little more than 3 minutes left in the game.””Three-point Stance
