LAFAYETTE — The third time was not the charm for the Lake Charles All-Stars.

Lake Charles held Lafayette to three points in the second half but turned the ball over twice and Lafayette won 17-7 in the third annual Louisiana High School Coaches Association I-10 Bowl Saturday at St. Thomas More’s Cougar Stadium.

After giving up 230 yards in the first half, Lake Charles held Lafayette to 76 yards in the second half.

"Getting to practice for just a week is kind of hard, but the defense played well," Lake Charles head coach Parry LaLande said. "The kids played hard.

"My hat is off to them. They played as hard as they could. They gave it all and they had fun."

Defensive lineman Tavonn Alexander (Lake Charles College Prep) was awarded team MVP honors after recording a pair of sacks. Jacalon Pitre (LCCP) added a pair of tackles for a loss and Andre Reed (Basile) made an interception in the first half.

Trailing 14-7, Lake Charles forced Lafayette to punt on its first drive of the second half and was able to get a stop inside its own 15-yard line, but Colin Lahaye (Lafayette Christian) kicked a 26-yard field goal for a 17-7 lead with 9:20 left in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Morgan Clark (Sulphur) led Lake Charles on a 73-yard, seven-play scoring drive to open the second half. A 44-yard pass to Da’Ren Zeno (Welsh) set up a 12-yard touchdown catch by Gage Rapp (Sulphur) to cut Lafayette’s lead to 14-7 with 8:42 left in the third quarter.

But Lake Charles’ offense sputtered after that as Lafayette’s Christian Archangel (Comeaux) and Latrell Charles (Acadiana) picked off Clark.

Luke Richard (Barbe) moved Lake Charles into Lafayette territory on a 15-yard pass to Zene Chretien (Barbe) with under 4 minutes to play, but was sacked on back-to-back plays by Jontrell Stewart (Breaux Bridge) and Dentreal Mouton (Acadiana) to end the drive.

One of Alexander’s sacks left Lafayette with a third-and-7 at the Lake Charles 22, but two plays later Zachary Clement (Lafayette Christian) was able to avoid the rush from Alexander and scored on a 20-yard run with 4:14 left in the first quarter.

Lake Charles looked like it had another big defensive stop when Pitre dropped Travien Benjamin (St. Martinville) for a 4-yard loss on second-and-goal from the 10. But Clement hit Deion Senegal (St. Thomas More) in the corner of the end zone for a 14-0 lead with 28 seconds left in the first half.

Lafayette got help in the drive from a personal foul that moved it inside the 10-yard line.

"One less penalty, we might have been down 7-0 at halftime, come back and tie it and it would have been a good ballgame," LaLande said.

Martin Lee (Lafayette Christian) earned MVP honors for Lafayette.

Carrington McClinton (Washington-Marion) was Lake Charles’ top rusher with 20 yards on six carries while Zeno caught three passes for 68 yards. Clark completed 4 of 9 passes for 76 yards.

Noah Bourgeois (Notre Dame) and Benjamin picked up 31 yards each for Lafayette while Clement completed 6 of 12 passes for 102 yards.
