Over 200 La. Guardsmen activated for Gordon

Because the governor declared a state of emergency due to Tropical Storm Gordon, how many Louisiana National Guardsmen are being activated?

The Louisiana National Guard, as directed by Gov. John Bel Edwards, has activated about 200 soldiers and airmen ahead of Tropical Storm Gordon, Sgt. 1st Class Denis B. Ricou, public affairs officer for the Louisiana National Guard, said.

The governor has also authorized an additional 150 Guardsmen to assist as needed, he said.

“In addition to 35 high-water vehicles and boats staged across the state in possible affected areas, the LANG has four helicopters ready to support search and rescue, evacuation and recon missions as needed,” Ricou said.

Ricou said Louisiana’s Guardsmen “are trained, ready and equipped to stand up at any moment to protect lives and property, maintain communications and ensure the continuity of operations and government.”

JPay app

Who owns the JPAY app? It is an app to transfer money to prisoners in Louisiana corrections facilities.

Securus Technologies is the parent organization behind the Miamibased JPay app.

Louisiana awarded a contract to JPay in 2011 “to provide electronic offender payments, release debit cards, offender email, kiosk services and MP3 players” to the state’s offenders and their families.

The company offers correctionsrelated services in more than 35 states.

The company’s website claims the money transfers “are quick and completely secure, and can be made from the convenience of your home computer, phone, or any MoneyGram agent location nationwide.”

Recurring payments are available, and money can be sent to multiple inmates where permitted.
