JDPJ calls election for tax renewals

JENNINGS — The Jeff Davis Parish Police Jury agreed Wednesday to call a Dec. 8 election for tax renewals for three more fire protection districts in rural areas.

All are 10-year renewals for maintenance, improvement and operation of the fire protection facilities and equipment, including the cost of obtaining water for fire protection services in rural areas.

Voters in Fire District 1 in the Roanoke area, will decide on a 10.86-mill property tax. It generates $43,000 annually.

In Fire District 5, which includes the Fenton, Iowa and Pine Island area, voters will decide on a 5.03-mill property tax. It generates $112,160 annually.

Those voters in Fire District 6, in the Elton area, will decide on an 8.66-mill property tax. It generates $98,600 annually.

Last month the Police Jury called similar tax renewals for Fire Districts 2,3, 4, and 7.

The ballot will also include the renewal of a one percent sales tax called by the town of Welsh.

In effect since 1994, revenues generated by the sales tax are used for maintenance and improvements of the police and fire departments, sidewalks, bridges, streets and recreation facilities.

The 25-year, one-cent sales tax would generate $425,000 annually beginning June 1, 2019.

The sales tax will provide funding for improvement and maintenance of the police and fire department stations and equipment, including fire engines, sidewalks and bridges, recreational facilities, drains and drainage facilities, streets and public buildings. It would also help purchase and acquire equipment and furnishings for public works, improvements and facilities.

Early voting for the election is Nov. 24-Dec. 1 at the Jeff Davis Parish Registrar of Voters Office in Jennings.
