South Beauregard, Iowa take top honors
District 4-3A dominated state baseball this season, producing both teams in the state championship game.
Those teams, South Beauregard and Iowa, also produced the award winners on the LSWA all state baseball team, with Chance Clark of state champion South Beauregard winning the Outstanding Player award and Iowa head coach Sean Richard winning the Coach of the Year award.
Clark went 10-3 with a 1.92 earned run average as a pitcher, including a pair of shutouts during the Golden Knights’ playoff run. At the plate, Clark hit .419 with 22 doubles, 29 stolen bases, 7 home runs and 39 RBIs. Clark helped the Golden Knights win their first state championship for a boys program.
Richard led Iowa to the District 4-3A regular season title, a school record 30 wins and the school’s third appearance in a state championship game.
Other locals on the 3A baseball first team were Logan Gray (7-2) of St. Louis, Jansen Fontenot (.412, 28 RBIs) and Hayden Gunter of South Beauregard (.398) and Hanson Raymond of Iowa (8-3, 1.29 ERA).
Making the first team in 3A softball was Westlake’s Myka Lester (.472, 19-6), who led the Rams back to the state tournament for the first time since 2010.
Softball award winners were Kaylee Lopez (.612, 16 HR, 29 RBIs) of state champion North Vermilion as Outstanding Player and Beau Bouvier of Brusly as Coach of the Year.
Brusly went 31-5 and won the District 6-3A title while claiming the No. 1 playoff seed in 3A. The Panthers finished as runners-up to North Vermilion at the state championship tournament.
