Hamilton routs Merryville, clinches share of district championship

Hamilton Christian earned a share of the District 4-1A crown with a 40-14 win over Merryville at John J. Mims Stadium.

The Warriors will share the title with Basile and Grand Lake, who each won Thursday night.

The win was the sixth straight for the Warriors (7-2, 6-1).

“We started a little sluggish and may have been distracted — it was our first game in the city this year and senior night,” Hamilton head coach Dexter Washington said.

“But we won a share of district and that is great for the kids. Merryville did some things to make it difficult for us. We couldn’t get to the corner but our coaches did a great job and found some things that worked.”

Merryville (2-8, 2-5) opened the scoring on a 58-yard touchdown run by Cam’ron Williams, but the Warriors dominated the rest of the half.

Ze’beian Doffney scored on runs of 1 and 30 yards in the first quarter to put the Warriors ahead 16-6. Derrick Williams scored on a 5-yard interception return to extend the lead to 22-6 at halftime.

Hamilton ran for 135 yards in the half while quarterback Neiman Sullen completed five passes for 65 yards.

Kylan Alexander and Devante Coffee had interceptions for Hamilton.

Williams ran for 79 yards on 14 carries in the first half.

The Warriors extended the lead to 34-6 in the third quarter on a 24-yard run by Logan Richard and 56-yard punt return by Elijah Belton.

Devante Coffee caught a 26-yard pass from Sullen in the fourth quarter.

Williams recovered a fumble in the end zone for a Merryville touchdown. He finished with 151 rushing yards on 28 carries. Dakota Thompson added 64 yards.

Doffney ran for 39 yards in the first half. Richard led the Warriors with 70 yards. Sullen threw for 107 yards and ran for 57 more.
