Triple Play: Weekend of elite baseball matchups

In this edition of the Triple Play, staff writers Warren Arceneaux and Rodrick Anderson take a look at this weekend’s baseball and softball games and track meets.

What is the most interesting baseball game?

WA: Zachary at Barbe, Friday. Two perennial Class 5A powers off to hot starts meet. The Bucs are undefeated while the Broncos are 10-5 with quality wins over Archbishop Rummel, Hahnville and Parkway. Zachary is 0-2 against District 3-5A teams with one-run losses to Sulphur and Sam Houston.

RA: Dutchtown at Sam Houston, Saturday. The second-ranked Broncos’ final game of the their tournament will be a top-five matchup with the No. 4 Griffins. Sam Houston has won seven in a row led by a pitching staff that allowed six runs in that span. Dutchtown has won 10 of its last 11 with a one-run loss to No. 3 Sulphur last weekend.

What is the best softball matchup?

WA: Sam Houston at Southside, today. The Sharks are 11-6, winners of four straight and averaging 14 runs per game in that stretch. The Broncos are 11-5 and can mash the ball as well with 10 games scoring double-digit runs.

RA: Bell City at Iowa, today. Both teams have been hot as of late with Bell City on a nine-game win streak and Iowa at five games. Bell City pitcher Addy Bonsall is coming off a 13-strikeout no-hitter, while Iowa’s Arlee Darbonne and Alya Stolleimer combined to throw a one-hitter in their last game.

Name a track athlete to watch this week.

WA: Reginald Burks, Lake Charles College Prep. Burks has the best Class 3A shot put mark in the state at 47 feet, 7 inches. He will compete Friday at the Washington-Marion meet.

RA: Tristan Goodley, Westlake. The senior is coming off a pair of indoor state titles in the long and triple jumps, and leads the area outdoor standings in both events at 22-9 in the long jump and 43-5½ in the triple jump. He will compete today at the Sam Houston Bronco Relays.
