Signing day arrives for basketball

The signing period for college basketball begins today with National Signing Day, when high school and junior college players throughout the nation will sign their National Letters of Intent to play for the NCAA programs they chose.

McNeese State is expected to welcome at least five new players during the signing period, which ends May 16, and the Cowboys say they have a lot of offers on the table.

Head coach Heath Schroyer and his staff said they have received five oral commitments since arriving in Lake Charles on March 19, most recently from guard Roydell Brown of Southwest Mississippi Community College, who announced his commitment on Saturday.

A native of Harvey who played at Helen Cox High School, Brown spent the 2016-17 season at Louisiana-Lafayette where he started in 10 games before transferring to Southwest Mississippi CC.

Brown averaged 16.1 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game as a sophomore. He is listed on the program’s website at  6-foot-5, 205 pounds.

Other oral commitments include forward ShaMarkus Kennedy from Chipola College in Florida, guard Tykeem Anderson from Trinidad State Junior College in Colorado, small forward Will Robinson from Gulf Coast State College in Florida and Texas-El Paso transfer guard Trey Touchet.

All but Touchet, a senior, will enter the program as juniors.

McNeese Sports Information Director Matthew Bonnette said Schroyer will not have a news conference on signing day because not all of the commitments will sign their NLIs today.

Bonnette said there will be a news conference after all the NLIs are received.
