Somebody’s gotta lose: ND or LCCP
Somebody’s zero is going to disappear tonight when the undefeated Lake Charles College Prep Trailblazers host Notre Dame, which has also started the season with six consecutive wins.
The non-district game has huge playoff implications with a bounty of power points going to the winner. The Blazers rank sixth in the Class 3A power ratings. Notre Dame is first in Division III. The game serves as a litmus test for the Blazers. This is the first game in which Prep faces a team with a winning record.
The Pioneers follow a simple script: keeping the chains moving with a powerful running game and giving up few points. The Pioneers have won all six games by double digits and have allowed one opponent to score more than 14 points. Notre Dame is 2-0 against area teams, with an opening week win over LaGrange and a district win over Kinder last week.
Notre Dame swept four games against area teams last year, including a 49-6 win over Prep. Running back Noah Bourgeois leads the offense with 769 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. He averages 8.5 yards per carry and has gained at least 90 yards in each game.
The Blazers are led by Orenthal James, who has run for 599 yards and 10 touchdowns. D’Marcus Miller has added 401 yards and three touchdowns.
LCCP head coach Erick Franklin said the campus has been filled with anticipation all week.
“It has been kind of crazy all week,” he said. “Everyone is excited for the biggest game in school history. We have been trying to keep the kids locked in.”
Franklin said his team needs to pick up the intensity to beat the Pioneers.
“In a big game you always want to try to control the game, limit mistakes and have no turnovers,” he said. “We have to keep the kids under control. You know Notre Dame is never out of a game, they can comeback from any situation.”
District 4-3A
Jennings (3-3, 2-0) will look to stay atop the standings when it hosts Westlake (1-5, 0-3). The Bulldogs are looking to recover from a last-minute loss to Welsh. Westlake lost to Washington-Marion last week despite a 315-yard game from running back J.J. Ross.
Iowa (2-4, 2-1) looks to continue its two-game winning streak when it hosts South Beauregard (2-4, 0-2). The ’Jackets earned a road win over St. Louis last week to remain in the title chase.
W-M (3-3, 1-1) also stayed alive with the win over Westlake. Tight end D’Corrion Malveaux hauled in four passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns last week, while quarterback MarQuez Chagois threw for 230 yards and four scores.
