New wastewater facility opens at Fort Polk

Fort Polk and local officials cut the ribbon Wednesday on a new wastewater treatment plant. The plant, on the south side of the post, can process 3.8 million gallons of wastewater — a capability that can increase to 4.6 million gallons.

American Water President Todd Duerr said the plant will help grow the military installation over the next 50 years. Brigadier Gen. Gary M. Brito said the plant is another investment in making Fort Polk a “premier installation.”

“We’ve made improvements to our infrastructure and opened up a new school just about one year ago,” Brito said. “These are all investments to both on post and off post intended to make the quality of life better for the troops, their families and the community that supports us.”

Duerr said the project, completed in four years, cost $80 million. As part of the project, 35,000 pine saplings were planted in the area for reforestation.
