Murder, mayhem, mystery headed to Jennings theater stage
Theater buffs and movie goers will have plenty of murder, mayhem and mystery at the Strand Theatre as local acting groups kick off the fall season this October.
The season also includes holiday stage productions from children and youth theater groups and a series of family movie nights at the historic Strand Theatre.
“The whole month of October has murder, mayhem and mystery and we’re wrapping it up with plays and movies, which makes it unique,” City Project Coordinator Lin Fake said, adding the fun continues with the Christmas theme. “We wanted to have something for the children and the adults so that everyone can be entertained and everyone can show off their talents.”
A Block off Broadway Community Theatre kicks off the season with its production of “Alfred Hitchcock Taught Me Everything I Know” by Pat Cook. Performances will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 1 and Oct. 8 and 2 p.m. Oct. 2 and 9 at the Strand Theatre, 432 N. Main St., Jennings. Tickets go on sale Sept. 26.
The play revolves around Maura Milton, who applies for a bookkeeper’s job at the home of one Tyrone Bartholomew. However, she soon finds out there isn’t one Tyrone Bartholomew but many. This spry old actor relishes life and flies from one character to another whenever dealing with the outside world.
The murder, mayhem and mystery fun continues at 6 p.m. Oct. 15 with movie night at the Strand Theatre featuring Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho.”
Children and adults young at heart can enjoy Disney’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” at 6 p.m. Oct. 22.
Movie night will continue at 7 p.m. Oct. 28 with a double feature showing of “The Conjuring” and “The Conjuring 2.”
The Christmas season will kick off with ABOB’s production of “This is Christmas to Me” by Amy Leger. Performances will be presented at 7 p.m. Dec. 10 and 2 p.m. Dec. 11. Tickets go on sale at 5 p.m. Dec. 5.
CHIP’S Littles Production will present its holiday performance of “Can Mrs. Claus Save Christmas?” by Ruth Ann Pattee at 7 p.m. Dec. 17 and 2 p.m. Dec. 18. The play begins with two weeks until Christmas and an exhausted Santa wistfully dreaming of a vacation in Hawaii. But even with the elves working hard and Mrs. Claus checking the list of good girls and boys, he just doesn’t have the time. Meanwhile, villain Gil Bates, a multi-millionaire video game manufacturer, longs for the one thing he does not have: the love of children. Bates knows Santa is loved by all kids, so he decides to kidnap him and force him to reveal the secret of his magic.
Performances continue into 2023 with a yet-to-be-announced CHIP’S Middles production at 6 p.m. Feb. 11 and 2 p.m. Feb. 12.
CHIP’S High School production of “The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940” by John Bishop will be presented at 7 p.m. March 31 and April 1 and 2 p.m. April 2. The play revolves around the creative team responsible for a recent Broadway flop in which three chorus girls were murdered by the mysterious “Stage Door Slasher.” The group assembles for a backer’s audition of their new show at the Westchester estate of a wealthy angel whose house is replete with sliding panels, secret passageways, and a German maid who is apparently four different people — all of whom figure diabolically in the comic mayhem which follows when the infamous “Slasher” makes his reappearance and strikes again— and again.
ABOB’s first production of the new year will be held in June. The production will be announced at a later date.
Movie nights at the Strand Theatre will be at 6 p.m. unless otherwise noted with doors opening at 5 p.m. Tickets are $3 with children 12 and under free.
