More fireworks: Burckel hits walk-off two-run bomb
History does repeat itself.
For the second straight night the Cowboys hit a walk-off home run and now find themselves tied for first place.
Brad Burckel’s two-out, 2-run shot just over the fence in left gave McNeese State a 6-4 win over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday night at Joe Miller Ballpark.
Burckel’s heroics came just 24 hours after Kade Morris’ 11th inning grand slam on Friday night.
“We would like not to make it so dramatic,” said Burckel.
It was Burckel’s sixth home run of the season.
“This shows this team has a lot of fight,” said Burckel. “We are going to fight until the end.”
Burckel’s shot ended a four-run ninth for the Cowboys, who improved to 8-6 in the Southland Conference and 22-17 overall.
SLU fell to 7-8, 17-22.
The game-winner followed Payton Harden’s game-tying triple and an run-scoring double from Braden Duhon.
It was also the second night Lions’ closer Gage Trahan (2-3) took the loss.
Going the other way, Burckel got the ball up in the wind and it kept carrying and just cleared the wall and glove of a leaping Tristan Welch. It was the Pokes third walk-off home run of the season.
“I thought he caught it,” Burckel said. “I wasn’t sure until I heard it hit the metal of the back wall.”
The comeback killed the return to Lake Charles of Adam Guth. With friends and family on hand, the freshman from Barbe High School got the start for SLU. Guth worked into the sixth inning, allowing just two runs on seven hits and striking out three. He worked out of a bases-loaded, no out jam in the third.
Morris, Duhon and Harden hit three straight singles to start the inning. But Guth struck out Kade Hunter and Burckel before getting Josh Leslie to ground out to get out of the threat.
“I was really struggling all night so I wanted to just get a good swing and make something happen,” said Burckel. “I missed first base watching it but I would not see where it went over. Then I heard the sound.”
In the fifth the Cowboys loaded the bases again, but managed just a sacrifice fly by Bourque to cut the lead to 3-2. The Lions scored a run in the fifth on a squeeze bunt and another on Rhett Rosenverar’s RBI single in the seventh.
For the second straight night Southeastern used the long ball to take the early lead. Welch launched a 2-run homer to left center with two out in the top of the second.
Welch’s sixth home run of the season scored Champ Artigues, who had started the rally just before him with a double.
McNeese got a run back in the bottom of the second thanks to Julian Gonzales.
The senior outfielder hit a solo shot, his fourth, deep over the fence in right.
NOTES: Morris’ walk-off grand slam in the 11th inning Friday night was the first such thing since 2014 for the Cowboys. James Cantu did the same to beat Southern 16-12 on April 30 that season…Neither of the two teams have announced a starting pitcher for today’s series finale set for 1 p.m.
