A spoonful of supercalifragilistic fun

Christian Youth Theatre’s fall season will culminate with a production of “Mary Poppins Jr.” Nov. 9-11 at LaGrange High School.

With a cast of more than 50 students, “Mary Poppins Jr.” appeals to all age ranges, said Cherie Benoit, managing director.

A “compressed” version of the Disney original, audience members — young and old — are sure to be engaged by the magical allusions of the production and by the nostalgia of the familiar songs, she said.

“The kids will love the music and magic in it and so will the adults who were brought up seeing the movie. I’ve had a lot of adults calling and saying, ‘That’s my favorite movie! We can’t wait to see it.’ ”

Cast members for “Mary Poppins Jr.” are students of CYT’s drama, music and vocal performance classes.

CYT, one of the newest members of Lake Charles performing arts scene, places strong emphasis on the curriculum within the classes available to students ages 4-18, Benoit explained.

“We have certified teachers who teach drama or choir at their schools,” she said. “You actually learn the parts of drama, voice and dance.”

When looking to bring the national non-profit to the Lake Charles area, Benoit said she was most impressed with the organization’s focus on teaching artistic skills to students in a faith-based environment.

“Before classes we do devotionals. We wanted a Christian environment where a kid and families can come and feel safe,” she said. “We’re promoting kindness, acceptance, friendships and bonds within the organization. (We’re) promoting people’s talents and helping them find out what all their talents are.”

CYT offers fall, winter and spring sessions of classes with registration for the winter session beginning in November. For more information or to purchase tickets for “Mary Poppins Jr.,” visit www.cytlakecharles.org.
