Apartment complex damaged by fire

Residents escape without injuries

A Lake Charles apartment complex on the corner of 1st Avenue and 18th Street was heavily damaged by fire Thursday afternoon.

But Lake Charles Fire Department District Chief Chris Carroll said no one was injured in the blaze.

“My units arrived on the scene and there was visible flames and smoke coming from the attic of two apartments in the seven-unit complex,” Carroll said.

Carroll said firefighters were able to cut a hole in the roof and extinguish the fire.

“There are two units that suffered a significant amount of damage, two units that had light smoke and water damage and three units that didn’t have any damage at all,” he said.

Carroll said people were inside two of the units when the fire started but were able to escape thanks to alerts from their fire alarms.

“That made it a whole lot easier on us because we didn’t have to worry about evacuations; we could just concentrate on fighting the fire,” he said.

Four fire engines and three ladder trucks responded to the fire and were able to extinguish it in about 45 minutes, Carroll said.
