Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office launches elderly calling system

Special to the American Press

The Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Office has launched a new automated call program to routinely provide check-ins on elderly and special need citizens. The “R-U-Ok” program places a telephone call every day to registered participants and asks the caller if they need assistance.

“This program is an added sense of security for those citizens that live alone and may not have regular visitors or callers,” said Sheriff Chris Savoie. “Participants will receive a call, either seven days a week or days of their choice, at a pre-scheduled time tailored to their individual needs. Should they require assistance, a deputy will be dispatched to their location promptly.”

When the automated call is answered, the recipient is asked to press a number on their keypad to confirm receipt of the call and that no services are needed. If the call is not answered after several attempts, dispatch receives an emergency alert that a citizen could be in need.

The time and frequency of the telephone call is set at the participant’s request and can be cancelled or altered at any time to accommodate changes in their schedule.
