Iowa High student arrested for bringing loaded gun to school

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested an Iowa High School student Monday after a loaded gun was found inside their backpack, authorities said.

Spokeswoman Kim Myers said the student was charged with illegally carrying a weapon in a firearm-free zone.

Myers said at no time did the student remove the gun from the backpack while at school.

Holly Holland, spokeswoman for the Calcasieu Parish School Board, said the gun was initially seen inside of the bag by another student who then reported the incident to administrators.

“At no time were students and faculty threatened,” Holland said. “The situation was handled quickly by school administration with assistance from the school safety officer and the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office.”

Iowa High School was not placed on lock down during the investigation due to the immediate action of the school staff, Holland said.

The student was booked in the Calcasieu Correctional Center.
