<p class="indent">In this edition of the Three Point Stance, staff writers Rodrick Anderson and Warren Arceneaux discuss results from the first week of the high school football season.</p><p class="indent"><span>Which team had the most impressive win?</span></p><p class="indent"><span><strong>WA</strong>:</span> Welsh turned things around after a lackluster showing in the jamboree, beating a Rayne team that reached the Class 4A semifinals last year. Austyn Benoit accounted for three touchdowns in his first varsity start at quarterback and the Greyhounds defense held Rayne to three points over the final three quarters.</p><p class="indent"><span><strong>RA</strong>:</span> Westlake trailed 13-0 at halftime but rallied to beat DeQuincy 22-21. The Rams turned a botched extra-point snap into the winning points late in the fourth quarter when holder Mark Ashworth picked up the ball and ran it in for two points and the lead. J.J. Ross rushed for 141 yards and three TDs on 19 carries.</p><p class="indent"><span>Which large school player had the best performance?</span></p><p class="indent"><span><strong>WA</strong>:</span> Barbe quarterback Luke Richard accounted for seven touchdowns, five passing and two rushing, to lead the Bucs to a big road win against Ponchatoula. Nearly half of Richard’s 11 completions went for touchdowns.</p><p class="indent"><span><strong>RA</strong>:</span> Sulphur wide receiver Julian Beverly. The Tors have three top-notch receivers, but is was seldom used senior Julian Beverly who sparked the Tors to a 54-42 win over Carencro. His first career varsity catch was a 57-yard touchdown and later caught a 29-yarder to set up another score.</p><p class="indent"><span>Which small school player was most outstanding?</span></p><p class="indent"><span><strong>WA</strong>:</span> Hamilton Christian running back Reggie Jackson ran for 312 yards and four touchdowns in the Warriors’ game against East Beauregard, scoring on runs of 2, 26, 54 and 64 yards. He also caught a pair of passes for 33 yards.</p><p class="indent"><span><strong>RA</strong>:</span> Vinton running back Jordan Janice. In his first start the junior pounded Grand Lake for 224 yards and five touchdowns on 19 touches, averaging 11.8 yards per carry. His longest run was a 71-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
