<p class="p1">There’s an old U.S. Army TV commercial in which an announcer says, “We do more before 9 a.m. than most people do all day.”

<p class="p3">Those words came to mind as I listened to how early the people at Moss Bluff Donuts arrive at work each day to make everything happen at the 857 Sam Houston Jones Parkway shop.

<p class="p3">Nary Seak, whose husband Sopheap Seak owns Moss Bluff Donuts, said a crew arrives at 2 a.m. each morning to cook, fry and bake the shop’s tasty treats, which are made fresh each day. Every bakery item that customers see when the doors open for business at 4 a.m. is less than two hours old.

<p class="p3">Behind the glass counters are delectable delights like croissants, eclairs, apple fritters and doughnuts of all kinds, but the thing I noticed first when I visited Tuesday were the kolaches. They’re really big. <p class="p3">The second thing I noticed is that there was cold Borden’s strawberry-flavored milk for sale in the beverage cooler. There was white and chocolate milk too, of course, but how often does one see strawberry milk? 

<p class="p3">In addition to milk, diners can wash down their doughnuts with coffee, soda, water, sports drinks, juice, or high-powered energy drinks. 

<p class="p3">Moss Bluff Donuts is directly across the street from Sam Houston High School, which makes it easy to find.

<p class="p3">Being so close to the school, Nary Seak said they do get student traffic in the mornings, but the shop’s busiest days are Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

<p class="p3">The Seaks, originally from Cambodia, owned a doughnut shop in Houston before relocating here three years ago and opening this one.

<p class="p3">During my visit, I sampled one of the sausage and cheese manatee kolaches and some doughnut holes. The kolache bread was fresh and the sausage and cheese were wonderful. The melt-in-your-mouth doughnut holes provided an instant sweet sugar rush.

<p class="p3">At Moss Bluff Donuts, customers can dine in or get their goods to go at the drive-thru window.

<p class="p3">Prices are reasonable:

<ul><li class="p4">A dozen glazed doughnuts is $6.50.</li><li class="p4">A large kolache is $2.15.</li><li class="p4">A sausage, egg and cheese biscuit is $2.25.</li><li class="p4">A small coffee is $1.25.</li><li class="p4">A small cappuccino is $1.50.</li></ul>
