Walmart to shut one La. store in Sam’s closure

Is the Lake Charles Sam’s Club store on the chopping block? I was really surprised when I saw the news that they were closing some Sam’s Club stores.

The Lake Charles site wasn’t on the list of 63 Sam’s Club stores that Walmart last week said it would shutter.

The closures, announced hours after Walmart said it would boost starting pay in flagship stores to $11 an hour, will affect only one site in Louisiana, the Sam’s Club on Cortana Place in Baton Rouge.

“The company will convert up to 12 of the impacted clubs to eCommerce fulfillment centers in a move that will speed delivery of online orders, with the balance of the facilities closing over the next few weeks,” reads a Walmart news release issued Jan. 11.

“Currently, Walmart and Sam’s Club operate more than 5,400 locations across the U.S.; after the actions announced today the company will have 597 clubs.”

The closures will affect nearly 10,000 workers, who the company news release said would receive a $1,000 bonus and two months’ pay, along with severance for those who are eligible.
