Call it a cart or call it a car, these handy vehicles are no longer limited to the golf course
Golf Cars Unlimited at 5606 Common St. in Lake Charles offers more than first-time visitors suspect.
“People who stop in are surprised to find that we have much more to choose from than a few showroom models, and the five or six cars we may have out in front,” said owner Mike Heinen.
Behind the sales and service center is a one-and a-half acre lot of golf cars, haulers, all-terrain and multi-functioning cars. Gas and electric models are available with two, four, six or more seats.
“We have new and pre-owned cars priced from $1,500 to $18,000,” Heinen said.
Trade-ins are accepted and financing is available. Golf Cars Unlimited also services golf cars, and sells parts and accessories. Ninety-day warranties are available for all pre-owned models. Models with new batteries include a two-year prorated battery warranty.
“We have always had a wide selection,” Heinen said. “That’s nothing new. However, the pavilion out back is new. I usually have 30 to 50 models available, 30 to 50 built-up models, and 30 to 50 raw models on site.”

Heinen uses the term “raw” to describe the cars that come straight from the golf course and other trade-ins. Leaving these cars in their original state makes it possible for customers to decide on color, body style, bumper-type, lift kits, seat upholstery, and other customized features. Models that have already been “built up” or refurbished look brand new.
In addition to being surprised at the large inventory, customers are also pleased to discover Heinen and his staff can build whatever the customer wants quickly, often in as little as a couple of days.
“We have everything we need right here, already in stock,” Heinen said.
Golf cars are no longer just for the golf course. Heinen said that with changes in local ordinances governing several communities surrounding Lake Charles, he’s seen a rise in purchases by those who simply want the ease and savings associated with a golf car for running to the neighbor’s house, a club meeting, church or grocery store. Hotels, as well as multi-family, housing property managers and maintenance crews, are all enjoying the benefits of golf cars. Hunters are headed to the woods in rough terrain models. Churches and event companies use golf cars to transport members and attendees—especially seniors—from parking to entrance. Ranches and farms benefit from using a golf car.

“My daughter gives me a hard time about all that all the time,” Heinen said. “The reason is because the Club Car brand uses car, not cart for its models.”
