JENNINGS — The Cajun Riders Club and Our Saviors Church, 1622 South Lake Arthur Ave., will partner with Second Harvest Food Bank for food distribution at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at the church.

“We will have pallets full of food and will be out there bagging and boxing it up,” said James Moss, treasurer for the Cajun Riders Club. “People just have to drive through, and we will load them up and send them on their merry way.”

The food is free to Jeff Davis Parish residents. This is the second time the groups have partnered to help residents fill their pantries.

“The last time we had 14,000 pounds of food — mostly canned and boxed goods and drinks — and we were able to serve several hundred people before we ran out of food,” Moss said. “We were overwhelmed by the response.”

He said he hopes to see the food distribution become an ongoing event. Helping feed others is nothing new for the Cajun Riders Club, a nonprofit group formed in 2005.

“Last year during the Hurricane Harvey flooding we had a thousand people from Texas evacuate to Jennings, and our club ended up running a distribution center,” Moss said. “We had a lot of volunteers and were shipping stuff out all over the place.”

The group was referred to Second Harvest Food Bank, which delivered a truckload of food, water and cleaning supplies. The rest is history, Moss said.

“Brittany Manuel, who is over the mobile food pantry, called us last November and asked if we’d do a food distribution in December,” he said. “We agreed and helped provide a place.”

When she called again this year, he said, the group was more than eager to help.
