The Class 5A baseball playoffs are set to kick-off this week, and Barbe drew off the seventh seed and will open at home against No. 26 Westgate, while Sulphur is the No. 12 seed and will open at home against Live Oak.
“Four teams ranked in top 12, that shows how tough our district was,” said Barbe coach Glenn Cecchini. “Sulphur coach Ron Riley said the strength of schedule should have the Tors prepared for the postseason.
Track meet
PALO ALTO, Calif. — McNeese State’s Michael Dyer finished eighth in the fourth section 800-meter run and Neil Jordan was 11th in the fourth section 1,500 Saturday night at Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational hosted by Stanford.
Dyer finished in 1 minute, 53.57 seconds, and Jordan ran the 1,500 in 4:01.96. The McNeese track and field teams are off until the Southland Conference championship meet.

Parish workers honored
Five Calcasieu government employees were honored by local Rotary Clubs for outstanding public service.
Parish employees Byron Foux, Andy McCain, Herman Mick, Diana Morales, and Homer Richard received the “Calcasieu Parish Employee Excellence Awards,” and commemorative plaques.
Player of the Week
McNeese Cowgirls outfielder Kerri Chiasson has been named the Southland Conference softball Player of the Week.
Keri Riggs led the Cowgirls for the season in batting with a .383 average. The team’s top pitcher was Tara Robinson with a 16-9 win-loss mark along with a 2.01 earned run average.

Episcopal churchwomen
The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd will be the hostess church for the 83rd annual meeting of the Episcopal Churchwomen, Diocese of Louisiana, to be held Tuesday and Wednesday.
Episcopal churches in the Lake Charles convocation will be participating in the event. Delegates for the host church will be Mrs. Wayne G. West and Mrs. Albert D. Johnson. Mrs. Hugh Shearman and Mrs. Sidney Pitts will serve as alternate delegates.
McNeese beauty
McNeese State’s Willie Landry, the college’s top elected beauty, will serve on the Gulf States Conference court along with representatives from each member school Saturday in Lafayette.
A Lake Charles junior, Miss Landry holds the title of LaBelle and has also served as a maid on the Homecoming court and has been a cheerleader for the past three years.

Hitler’s suicide proclaimed
LONDON — Adolf Hitler, who has vowed to rule the world, committed suicide in the ruins of Berlin with Propaganda Minister Paul Joseph Goebbels and the chief of the German general staff, Gen. Hans Krebs, a Soviet communique said today.
Russians declared their informant was Dr. Hans Fritsche, Goebbels’ chief lieutenant, who was captured as Berlin Fell. It was presumed the Russian commanders on the scene would make a vigorous inquiry to obtain indisputable proof.
WIA in Germany
Army Private Harold W. Smith has been wounded in action in Germany on March 28, according to the War Department.
Private Smith was wounded once before in Germany last September and was awarded the Purple Heart. His parents are Mr. and Monroe Smith who live near Kinder.
