Allen voters renew sales, property taxes

Elizabeth voters on Saturday renewed a sales tax for infrastructure, while voters in parts of Allen Parish renewed a property tax to support hospital services.

According to unofficial results from the Secretary of State, voters in Elizabeth renewed a 10-year, one-percent sales tax fax for supporting and operating the town’s general fund.

The sales tax passed in a 30 -12 vote, with 71 percent in favor of reinstating the tax which had expired.

Revenue generated from the tax will continue to fund essential services such as road repairs, public safety, park improvements, property maintenance, drainage improvements and daily operations of the utility department. The sales tax is projected to generate about $78,000 each year.

Voter turnout was nearly 14 percent.

In other local elections, voters in the Kinder, Reeves and portions of Oberlin also approved the renewal of a 10-year, 3-mill property tax. The measure supports the maintenance and operation of Hospital Service District 3, which includes the Allen Parish Community Healthcare in Kinder.

The millage, which has been in effect since 2017, was approved with a vote of 393 – 108 vote, or 78 percent in favor.

It is expected to generate $189,000 annually to cover general maintenance and operational costs including improvements and upgrades to building, facilities and equipment.

The voter turnout for the renewal was nearly 8 percent.
